Made for the joy of family

Ramp House was conceptualised based on a heartwarming brief: the father wanted his daughters to experience the joy of running around freely, which he did when he was growing up. Thus, their home was designed with ramps that wrap around the house that can take the family from the garden on the ground floor to the rooftop 20-metre swimming pool.

The ramps also connect the family to the various levels seamlessly, but more importantly, it also acts as a shield for the living spaces against the heat and tropics of Singapore’s weather. Performing like the deep roof eaves commonly found in indigenous tropical architecture, this allows the rooms to be well ventilated throughout the day. The lower part of the ramp is made from a fiberglass crate that allows for light and ventilation into the basement car porch and landscape. The higher ramps have a glass slot inserted at the edge to bring diffused daylight into the spaces below.

One of the family’s favourite moments as shared by their grandmother, is when she sits in the living room and she can hear the peals of laughter from her grandchildren as they run up and down the ramps.
