Combining digital techniques with physical craftsmanship to re-define materials

Using 473 pieces of laminates, Formwerkz Architects wove a sculpture that looks hard like a boulder, but is actually soft and flexible. The motivation behind the design is centred on pushing the idea of a laminate beyond its conventional use to reveal its myriad of capabilities – some of which are often hidden. This was explored via the use of parametric design where we studied the geometry and structural integrity of the material; prototyping and testing its strength and breaking point. They eventually found optimal parameters and/or conditions for each laminate unit, and pieced them together with joints that were 3D printed. In the making of Boulder, zero waste was generated.
