Empowering the Ele chair with a dress tailored from its own scrap leather

”Frag-ments” is an art installation designed by Studio iF for the P5 AR_T Campaign, where 8 different design studios were handpicked to decorate a Frag Dining Chair to illustrate what heritage, leather and craftsmanship means to each studio.

”Frag-ments” arose as a reflection of the Ele chair design and construction. The designer, Michele di Fonzo was inspired by the female silhouette that informs the form of the Ele chair. We were looking to empower the chair with a dress tailored from its very own scrap leather.

In the construction of the Ele chair, excess scrap leather is produced. Due to the irregularity of the leather fragments, it is laborious to program technology to maximise the utilisation of these excess scrap leather. As such, we identified the only logical approach is an entirely handmade process to upcycle the scrap leather. This could spark off Frag’s very own social economic initiative of reaching out to communities in need by engaging them to work on such a project. Find out more about the making of “Frag-ments” here.

Adopting a weaving method, a singular leather module can be joined to form endless possible permutations, only limited by one’s imagination. This echoes the manifesto of the design studio. The interlocking pattern that is created incites the same ethos of synergy and collaborative spirit of our design and digital collective which is made out of 5 different disciplines.

Quintessential to any setting, chairs are timeless icons. “Frag-ments” is defined by the user interacting with it, having the ability to adapt and transform to each user’s interaction with it, giving a different dimension to the artwork.
